Africa investor (Ai) today confirmed that Dr. Hubert Danso, its CEO and Chairman, and the Chairman of the African Union’s Continental Business Network (CBN), has been appointed Co-Chairman of the Sustainable Markets Africa Council (SMIAC).

The SMI Africa Council, suggested by His Majesty King Charles III, was launched during His Majesty’s State visit to Kenya, his first visit to a Commonwealth nation as King. During this visit, King Charles III and Dr. Danso addressed the private sector and United Nations staff.
His Majesty is the Founder of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, the world’s ‘go-to’ private sector organization on sustainability and the global transition.

The SMIAC was established in recognition of the current realities of the African continent’s 1.3 billion people and the shared ambition of its 55 countries to establish a common position through the Nairobi Declaration (Africa’s Green Investment Deal) in combating climate change, biodiversity loss, and fulfilling their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At its heart, the objective of the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Africa Council is to champion collective and scalable action by business, finance, and investment in support of sustainability agendas and institutional investor-public partnerships (IIPPs) across the African continent to benefit people, planet, and nature.

Under Dr. Danso’s leadership, the members of the Africa Council will develop, propose, and adopt innovative solutions and best practices that address some of the most pressing sustainability needs across the continent, scaling private sector participation in support of implementing the Nairobi Declaration and NDC investment projects. Dr. James Mwangi, CEO of Equity Group Holdings, Co-Chairs the SMIAC with Dr. Hubert Danso.

The Africa Council is the latest addition to the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Country Engagement activities. The Council is the first Regional Council and joins a cohort of three Country Councils: China, India, and Greece.
